If you like going to the movies, you're in luck because the French do too. Globally, France ranks number 4 in Cinema attendance.
In 2012, admissions in movie theaters totalled 204.26 million. 40.2% of the films were French, 45.3% American, and 14.5% from everywhere else. Having such a variety of films, there is always a good movie to see, from independent to box office.
Regarding the American and foreign films, depending on where you go, they'll have them dubbed in French or in original version (VO) with French subtitles. In Paris, at UGC Les Halles, all of their foreign films are in VO, making it a nice way to practice your French reading skills. As for outside of Paris, I know that in Nancy, Grenoble, and in Marseilles, it's difficult to find American films in VO. Almost always, the independent films are in VO no matter where you go in France.
I love that the French enjoy going to the movies. There are 2,030 movie theatres with 5,464 movie screens in France. It's very nice to be able to see a movie wherever you are in France.
From small villages to large cities, you can find movie theaters having just one screen. Sometimes, they're really big rooms, while other times I think to myself - shoot this could be someone's home theatre or media room. But that's ok, I don't mind it one bit. There is definitely a feeling of community and nostalgia when going to 1 screen move theatre.
